Adolfo Arrieta
Born in 1948 in Madrid. Initially a painter, in 1964 he decided to devote himself to the cinema. He made Le crime de la toupie (1966) and L'imitation de l'ange (1967) in Madrid. In 1967, Arrieta moved to Paris. He directed Le Jouet Criminel in 1969, Le château de Pontilly (1971), Les intrigues de Sylvia Kousky (1974), then in 1975 Tam-Tam and finally Flammes, produced by INA in 1977. Les intrigues de Sylvia Kousky won the "Cinéma Différent" Grand Prix at the Toulon festival in 1974. "From Crime de la Toupie (1966) to Flammes (1978), we see a transition from a resurgent Christian mythology to an adult cinema which concerns us more, (..) starting with Château de Pointilly (1971), he sets out to reflect on narrative, a secret, marginal world is shown, brought to the fore, (the transvestites in les intrigues de Sylvia Couski; 1974) What makes these early films so interesting (they were all shot in Franco's Spain), is the flowering of a free spirit in a fascist state where individual (or collective) expression is forbidden, fossilised, castrated. The fantasies are managed with a great deal of naïvety and consistency, (the fantasy of the angel with paper wings recurs periodically)." Gérard Courant, Cinéma 78, Aout 78, Cinéma ici et ailleurs, festival et rencontres : Digne : Pour un cinéma non indifférent. |
