Maya Deren

"Maya Deren est née Eléonora Derenkowsky le 29 avril 1917 à Kiev (Ukraine). Elle émigre avec sa famille à New York, fuyant l'antisémitisme. Poète, militante socialiste, assistante de la chorégraphe Katerine Dunham (1940-1942), c'est avec son second époux Alexander Hammid qu'elle entreprend la réalisation de Meshes of the Afternoon et une réflexion sur le cinéma. Après un séjour à Haiti, où elle est initiée au Vaudou, elle revient aux Etats-Unis et meurt subitement en 1961.
